    Noisy Panesthia angustipennis angustipennis

My Panesthia angustipennis angustipennis males are very noisy!  Once in a while one of them comes to the surface and starts making noise by hammerings with its abdomen on a piece of wood. The wood and the enclosure kind of resonates and enhances the noise.  I manages to make an audio recording...

    Activity graphs different cockroaches

After collecting cockroach activity in my collection for more than a year now, I decided to make some graphs.  Each graph is made up of 505056 datapoints (measurement every 10 seconds for 2 months).  X-axis: hour of the day Y-Axis: Activity level and light level in the enclosure.  Among the...

    Kyle getting back into business

I just read on http://www.roachcrossing.com/major-life-updates-unanswered-e-mails-facebook-reboot-future/, that Kyle is getting things back in order. That's good news, especially for Kyle himself! I didn't know what had happened last year, but knowing know after reading his message, it has been...

    Two Schizopilia fissicollis roaches died

A few days ago two of my Schizopilia fissicollis nymphes died unexpectantly. One just sat on top of a leave, the other on top of a piece of wood. Not moving.... Which made me suspicious.  I have their death on camera (time-lapse). They have been moving around in the hours prior to they demise...

    Another Archimandrita tesselata male hissing

Today I managed to capture a video of another of my Archimandrita males hissing when disturbed.  Anyone else with hissing Archimandrita roaches?

Agar blocks with banana aroma as water source

Does anyone else use agar gel instead of water crystals to water their roaches?  This is what I do: I make a 1% agar gel. I mix the agar with water and boil it. Next I poor it into a plastic box and let it cool. After that I cut it in small blocks and put them in a container with water.  To...

    Polyphaga saussurei elevated activity

I have 7 Polyphaga saussurei roaches since november 2016. It looks like some are now becoming adults.  And while so far they almost never got to the surface, even at night, one adult female saussurei is above ground every night since a couple of days.  At first I was wondering that she might...

    Eupolyphaga sinensis: first babies (photos)

My first Eupolyphaga sinensis nymphs appeared!  I managed to get some photographs of the 2 day old nymphs. They must have eaten already, as their intestines got dark. They are about 3mm / 0.12 inch in length.  The ootheca hatched after about 6-7 weeks (at constant 28C / 83F).

Cockroaches on their back, flipping (and digging)

Out of curiosity to see how different cockroach species handle being on their back on sand, I made some videos.  Fine sand is very difficult for insects deal with...  First: Eupolyphaga sinensis female:

    Archimandrita tesselata Hissing

I discovered that older male Archimandrita tesselata roaches can hiss. I was completely surprised that when I touched one of my 2 year old males, he hissed. Pretty much the same way as a Madagascar roach does (albeit much fainter). I checked to see if it wasn't through wings scrubbing or...

    Computer regulated enclosures

Recentlly I automated my cockroach enclosures.  An automated day/night heatingcycle. Gradual light dimming with red lights at night. Automated fogging to add moisture. This all combined with cameras that register and quantify movement.  That gives me quite a good insight on the activity of...
