Breeding between Domino female and Ergaula Pilosa male?

Why on earth?  They aren't even in the same genus, much less the same species! Has anyone else seen that ?

Need help with rescued emperor scorpion!

I found an emperor scorpion in appalling conditions and rescued it.  It has a heater on one side of its glass enclosure, substrate, multiple hiding places, and a bowl of non-tap water at all times.  I don't know if it is male or female, or if it is mature.  I've had it for about a week and a...

Difficulties sexing nymphs even when they're large?

I've never had this problem before!  I need to sex my Simandoa nymphs to separate them to prevent further matings, but every single nymph I check seems male based on the ventral segments.  I'm not sure of the exact instar they are but most of them have to be four or five if not even six! They...

    Need help with Simandoa Conserfariam

I've had an adult male and female together now for many months and I've yet to see any babies.  I changed their substrate today and verified the lack of babies.  They get carrots, oranges, dried cat food, water crystals, and powered dubia food.  They have a heater.  I don't want to breed them to...

Specific roach species that tend to smell?

I don't mean because of having a huge number of them in a small container with rotting dead.  I mean more which species have a smell in general even with a clean enclosure.   The only species I have where I've noticed an odor is my container of male Aeuluropoda Insignis a.k.a. flat horn...

Roach cannibalism - does it count only involving live roaches?

I find this topic interesting, as I have occasionally found a dead roach in one of my enclosures who has been nibbled on.  I generally find dead roaches intact, but when I don't it's usually an adult who has lived its life.  I find two feeding patterns.  The first tends to be that the presumably...

Simandoa Conserfariam - please help me

So I know this roach is extinct in the wild and was found in a single cave system in west Africa, that they grow to up to nearly two inches, that they are livebearers like hissers, but what else is out there about them? I had my first reach adulthood today and I'm thrilled.  He is lovely.  ...

Cockroaches that bite people within Blaberus?

I read somewhere that some species with the genus Blaberus can bite people is this true?  Any idea why they would? Are there any other genera known for biting?

My millipede chewed on my wrist!

I picked it up and it started eating me !  It didn't hurt but I could feel it.  I let it nibble for a while and placed it back.  Why would it do that ?   It has carrots and millipede substrate.  But I guess it needed some human flesh lol.

    Mysterious Blaberus Colosseus Nymph Death

I ordered two of these and they came in the mail about a week ago.  One is going strong but I found the other dead.  They have dead leaves, carrots, a heater, kibbled cat biscuit, water crystals and a partridge in a pear tree.  They are about an inch long.  I'm feeling guilty of course for his...

Tips on identifying nymphs of different species ?

I've gotten better with identifying nymphs by genus, so I can usually tell if it's Gromphadorhina, Elliptorhina, etc, but do you have any tips on identifying within the genus? For example, will the black strain of Grandidieri be solid black as nymphs? How about any tips on distinguishing...

Can all members of Therea interbreed?

Dominos, orange domino, question marks...  I know the rule is usually that species of the same genus MUST be kept separate to avoid interbreeding.  Is hybridization possible within Therea?

How to clean hard water stains on glass display tank?

I use glass tanks to hold my roaches and display them but there are hard water stains from misting their enclosure that make watching them less enjoyable.  I heard using lemon juice works but I have to say it's not very effective.  I don't want to use soap because I don't want to hurt them...

Heavy "breathing" on the part of pregnant females?

I've noticed sometimes that pregnant female hissers of all types sometimes sway back and forth rhythmically every eight to fifteen seconds.  The movement is very slight but if you keep your head still and watch for it you'll see it.   Has anyone else noticed this? Is it common knowledge ?

Grain Mites ? What do they look like and how to get rid of them?

I have noticed these little creatures on pieces of carrot in some of my enclosures.  They seem wingless and I took pictures but this site doesn't accept them.   What do they look like and how can I get rid of them? Are they dangerous for my roaches? They are pets for me and I don't want any...

Stupid question - are some Hissers species more delicate than others?

I have tried keeping Javanicas aka Halloweens a number of times but they seem to not flourish.   As an example I got 15 nymphs in September and only 4 are alive now.  A few haven't even reached adulthood.  They have a heater and places to hide and get carrots and powdered roach food as well...

    Roach Etymology - Help Please!

I'm trying to figure out the etymology of some of the scientific names of species and genera. For example I looked up aeluro and apparently it means cat in Ancient Greek so Aeluropoda means cat footed or something similar.  The flat horned hisser Aeluropoda Insignis means marked cat footed. ...

    How to identify hybrid hissers?

Does anyone have tips for what to look for?  I am familiar with how portentosa, grandidieri and oblongonota look so I'm well on my way toward looking for something that is a mix of them.  I was just hoping for some clear tips. My understanding is that many hissers labeled portentosa a are...

Do hissers have built-in population control mechanics?

I was thinking about whether the adults are self aware of the amount of space they occupy in captivity and will cut back on mating and reproduction if the enclosure gets too  full?  Alternatively  would they just breed ad nauseum  until they had crowded out their small space?
