Alternatives to egg flats

I know egg flats are The best! hands down. I was wondering if there is something comparable as far as giving enough space. I am trying newspaper myself, only down side i see is the frass doesn't collect on the bottom of the enclosure. Only a few places offer cheap flats online and I just cant find any local.

 
go to a natural food store in town and ask for some egg cartons or go to walmart and ask they should give you some for sure natural food places will

 
I was just hoping maybe someone else has had excellent luck with alternatives. Like paper towel, toilet paper rolls, drink holders, shredded paper possibly? I'm using whole newspaper balled up, i have the container almost full with newspaper. Just enough room too fit my food/water crystal trays. If it comes down to it i can order 140 flats for around $20-$30 which is a great deal. But newspaper is near free. B)

its 27 for 70 which still isnt bad. Does anyone know about the ink on newspaper?? Would this be bad on the roaches?
