I got a magazine from the DNR that talked about how oaks are divided into two groups, red oaks and white oaks. It says that red oak contains more tannic acid than whites and can be distinguished by their pointed lobes while white oaks have rounded or blunt lobes. It also said that animals usually prefer white oaks because the tannic acid is bitter tasting. After reading about this I decided to check what sort I've been feeding my Rhinos. It turns out I've been giving them both and they seem to have a preference for red oaks, but there's also a difference in the state of decay between the leaves (red is still glossy) so it may have more to do with that.
But while on the subject of leaves, what do your bugs like best? Not limited to oaks.
