is it possible for a Madagascar to die from pregnancy?

our female hisser has been pregnant for /forever/. We've seen her vent her eggcase here and there. and she looks very uncomfortable,.always wiggling around and sometimes twitching as it the babies are 'kicking' and she seems agitated.

My boyfriend is concerned that she could die if she doesn't have the babies soon?

Is it possible that if our tank isnt hot enough that she will just hold them in till she dies?

our tank has a good size zoomed heater and is still refusing to get hotter than 80 degrees.

is this bad or are we just being impatient?

This particular female is my favorite, her name is Lady and she is a very lovely shadeof orange and i would be really upset if she died having these babies.

 
Put her into a different enclosure. No substrate, no other roaches, just egg crate, moisture, and some protein with NO heat. Room temp for that time. My hissers ALWAYS bred in heat but never had babies so I would constantly take them off of heat then BAM. Babies.

 
OMG IT WORKED.

NATE TOOK HER OFF THE HEAT AND PUT HER IN A LITTLE CRITTER KEEPER WITH SOME EGG CRATE AND A BABY CARROT, HE LEFT TO GET ME FROM WORK AND WHEN HE GOT HOME....

BAAAABIESSS!!!!!

when can we put her back with the other two roaches?

omg im so happy. im not selling any. im just going to keep them all forever @_@

LOL I told you! You can add her back into the colony. But in like 3 more months if you dont see any babies, do it again. I got rid of my hissers (well most of them) because it got annoying trying to keep the babies contained and the heat thing... Oh well!

 
Can we put our other female (Chica) in there cause shes pretty fat too.

Will she eat Lady's babies?

Do i need to put the babies on heat now?

Hissing comes in around 5th instar.

If you want them to grow faster put them on heat but its not necessary.

Hissers will typically be good with others babies. Just dont mix different species with each other. Hissers will out compete others.

If you mean put her into the "baby chamber" and if you feel like she is ready to have babies have at it.

 
We went ahead and put Chica in there with Lady's babies to see if she will have babies too.

My boyfriend is so exstatic about the whole thing hes telling me,."i just want to hold one". Hes so happy about the 'grandbugs'.

He just looked at me and said,.."we are going to need a bigger box". So im thinking of getting a few of the 10g plexi tanks that have the screen lids that go with them because i dont trust the plastic tubs for hissers. Dubia yes, cause they cant climb. But hissers? nope.

So i'll set up like 2 tanks with ZooMed heaters and keep Chica, Carlos and Lady in their 2g tank to live out their lives.

Because those are our original three and we dont want to lose them in the masses lol.

 
Okay so we put Chica in there and nothing happened for two days. so we went ahead and put her back in with the other two for another few weeks.

@RomanBuck, do you know if this would also apply to dubia's? I'm having a big colony which I would like to use for commercial production and if this would also apply to dubia's that would be great :)

 
I have never had a problem with dubias breeding and having babies. I have kept them room temp and they have babies, kept them 80 degrees and they had babies, kept them 90+ degrees and they had babies. They are almost indestructible.

 
boyfriend woke up this morning to rustling in the roach tank. Lady and Carlos are at it again. Jesus.

She had her babies a few days ago and shes already knocked up again.

Chica still hasnt had her babies.

@ZipperMouth, sorry for hijacking your thread again, but @RomanBuck, I have had no trouble breeding dubia's as well, but I'm trying to optimalize the breeding proces right now. I currently get around +20 grams of babies per week from only 350 females, but I'm looking for ways to improve this (there have been weeks with 35-45 grams).

calculation: 16 grams are about 600 babies - 600 adults are about 1 kilogram.

i think this is pretty much a hobbyist website dear.

So my friend Taylor at our local pet-shop counted our first batch of Madagascar babies and we have a whopping 61 Madagascar babies.
