roach penis or parasite?

Keith

Megaloblatta
I bought a dubia with something sticking sideways out of it's rectum, it does not retract back in and sometimes it moves. It's grayish and at the end is a thin black hook, I cant get a photo right now. I was wondering if its the gential or a parasite, and if a gential how does this happen, the roach seems fine otherwise.

He may have a problem with his genitalia. I doubt it is a parasite that you see. The black hook thing sounds like a normal phallomere, but the fact that you can see it may not be normal.

A photo would be helpful.

I'll have to try and get a photo this week. He does normal mating behavior too.

Here is the best photo I could get.

It doesn't look too good. He probably was injured during mating or molting.

Maybe you can spray it with water and try to clean it up a bit. That way you can see what part of it may be phallomere, scab, or frass/substratum that may be stuck to it.

Your roach is hung like a pimple. Check out the one in the background at the end of this video:
