This is one place to look. just google polyacrylamide crystals and maybe cross reference with "gardening." You'll find other sources. If it is available to you, you can also use agarose (can be called agar-agar). Or canning sugar has been suggested. For "greener" methods of making water crystals, personal message Pharma. He's member of this forum.

I order this in large quantities for my bugs and help other bug keepers out by saving them money. I have it available in any size. Stay away from the commercially prepared ones that contain calcium. Has anyone thought of using Knox gelatin? Granted, it might not last as long as crystals & is a bit more difficult to prepare & use, but...I just get a bit weirded out about feeding non-natural substances to these guys. I know people have been doing it for years with no ill effects, but, I guess I'm just a hippie at heart. ;)

One could also go a step further and cook the gelatin with orange or apple juice for a vitamin-boost mix!

I think I may try this & let everyone know how it goes. I have about a hundred packages of Knox in the pantry leftover from last year's health-food kick!

Well, they DO like the Knox gelatin! However, it should come as no surprise to anyone that it doesn't last longer than a day...36 hrs max...before molding. (It is, after all, basically the same substance that is used to culture bacteria in labs!) There wasn't MUCH left, but my colonies are small still, so they couldn't eat/drink all that I gave them.

So, I will try a few more experiments and keep folks posted. For this batch, I prepared it with the juice squeezed from one orange (the rest of the liquid was water.) I'm also thinking of using: Apple juice, cider vinegar (for mold inhibitor), Methylparaben (mold inhibitor), & colloidal silver (antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal.)

I will also probably start a new thread on this...didn't mean to take over this one! Sorry! :o
