    Diapheromera femorata

From Elytra and Antenna and BugsinCyberspace I've learned they eat bramble, black cherry, rose, clover, oak, locust, apple, viburnum, and raspberry. Is there any complete list of foodplants for young and adults, and are all of these correct?

    Twitchy behavior in nymphs

As you can see in my sig, I got my 2nd generation of hissers recently. There were only a dozen because of the length of gestation, which I think was due to my low temp. I need to get a heat lamp. Anyway, one of the nymphs began acting twitchy and erratic yesterday, often falling on its back...

    Pygmy Locusts Breeding Project

I caught 8 Paratettix sp. in west Illinois today. I set them up in a terrarium with sand, rocks, and grasses. I've observed 1 mating and feeding on algae. No pics because of their smallness. I figured I'd start a thread on these little-known buggers.

    Hisser dropping eggs!

One of my female hissers is leaving individual eggs around the tank. There are eight roaches in a maybe 18"X6"X6" plastic container, with egg cartons, soil, moss, and wood. She appears healthy in every other way, and has been adult for around 6-8 months. I took the eggs out and put them in a...

    Mantid problem

One of my hatchling Chinese mantids seemed listless today. He collapsed around 2:00, so I managed to get him to hold onto some netting upside-down. His abdomen is pulsating, but there is little movement otherwise. He's a day over a week old, so I suspect that this is a molting attempt.

    Cockroach Allergies!

My younger brother has recently developed mild cockroach allergies. This is obviously very distressing. Now I know that most roach allergies are caused by the frass and stuff. So, is there any kind of caging I can use, be it substrate, container, or anything, that will lessen the allergies?

    Byrsotria fumigata

I'm looking into getting some of these. Mostly, I'm wondering what size they get to (comparison to hissers or something would be nice), and if they have any particular issues with husbandry. Thanks!

    Consequences of aborted ooth?

One of my female hissers aborted an ootheca (no idea why) a couple days ago, and she's had a translucent, off-white blob hanging out of the back of her abdomen. It's squishy and liquid-filled, and she doesn't seem to have feeling from it. What is this? Is surgery needed, and will she be able to...

    Craniifer breeding problems

One of my females mated at least a month ago. I can tell she's gravid, but no young yet. They live in a pretty spacious cage, with lots of "furniture". I keep it damp and put them under a heat lamp whenever I can. Is this normal?

    Hisser adolescent behavior

My thought-to-be subadult hissers, when I gave them a heat lamp, suddenly began fighting and attempting to mate. They are only about 2 inches long and maybe 1 inch wide. Are they just small adults (I did have some husbandry issues early in their lives), or is this normal for subadults?

    Yet another erronneus news article

Look here at how they treat the dung beetle (number 6?)! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26633725/ Dung beetles are vital to the ecosystem, and all they get is a passing glance at the gross side (one sentence at the end explains the correct view. I don't like how they treat the other animals...

Praying mantis breeding and eye color

I've noticed that my chinese mantises (mostly the females) change eye color depending on the time. The eyes are basically black at night, and lighter in the morning. Why? Also, I have been attempting to breed a male (5 days old as adult) and a female (2 weeks as adult). He is usually afraid of...

Very cool hemipteran from What's That Bug?

Go here, then scroll down a little. http://www.whatsthatbug.com/ That true bug looks like a nymph, but I still thought it looked cool enough to ask if you guys know what it is. Oops, turns out that they found out what they are. They are immature lace bugs.

    Substrate depth

I finally got some sandy/dirty substrate (with some dead leaves and stuff) in my craniifer cage and they love it. At its deepest point, it is over 1 inch. They tend to bury themselves just under the surface. Is this normal, or should I add more substrate?

    New craniifer

I finally got 5 nymphs of Blaberus craniifer from Blaberus.com! I was so relieved that they really couldn't climb! They are adorable, but really fast and hyper. Do they slow down once the excitement of shipping is over or when they become adults? Also, do they really need substrate? My cage has...

    Hisser horn growth

Three of my hissers are apparently subadult (just after the molt they're 3cm or so long and >1.5cm across). Two are males, and the "horns" are only about 1-2mm out of the thorax. Is there another molt between this and the adult stage? They can hiss pretty well too.

    Mantid sexing

I have a third instar (molted twice) chinese mantis and I'm wondering if it's possible to sex them at this age.

    pelidnoda punctata

Hi, I found a grapevine beetle (P. punctata) in western Illinois. How common are these beetles there? I've kept them before and gotten them to mate, but the females never layed eggs. Does anyone have experience with P. punctata and a proper breeding environment?

    Third protrusion problem

My female P. pennsylvanica nymph has a white, wet protrusion coming out of the end of her abdomen. It is about 1mm out from the body under the right cercus. Is this a molting problem (see my thread about the hissers a couple threads down), or some other damage? Will she be able to reproduce?
