*CLOSED* Hisser (portentosa) colony for trade

scottbot84

Third Instar
Looking to trade the following two colonies for polyphaga or corydiid species (Therea regularis or Polyphaga aegyptiaca,), isopods, or stag/rhino beetles (Dynastes tityus, Lucanus elaphus, etc.)

The two colonies are:

Gromphadorhina portentosa (hybrid) - aprox. 50 individuals + at least 40-50 nymphs.

Aeluropoda insignis - approx 100 individuals + nymphs. A few larger males, purchased as a starter colony but there are varied sizes and ages.

Since either of these species are common, I would expect a smaller number of individuals in trade.

Photos by request, DM if interested.

Update 5/15/2020 -  I've sold or traded these down to the point I'm happy with what I have left. Thanks everyone!!

I'm open to other trades as well. I'll consider cash offers but I am trying to trade so as to not take business from others.

I believe all Hisser species can hybridize unforuntately, though I very well may be wrong.

Any particular species of isopod you are looking for?

Thanks,

Arthroverts

I don't have any particular isopods in mind, oddly enough.

I have powder orange, zebra, and dairy cow, so something else besides those. I don't use isopods for feeders, just for display, so something mildly interesting.

Therea regularis is on the top of my list, but those seem very hard to come by.

Decent looking male, pretty clearly a hybrid. Didn't notice the upload limit. will add a gallery elsewhere.

Aeluropoda can indeed hybridize with at least one of the Gromphadorhina species, (the sp. "Tiger", ex "grandidieri"), however I've never seen mislabeled A.insignis hybrids being sold anywhere... Yet. So I'd say yours are pure unless you tossed them in with other hissers. 😛

And as for the Gromphadorhina, technically that G.portentosa looks pure to me, a little small though, males from the pure bred Cleveland Aquarium's stock are typically notably larger than that. Of course, if they're not from a trusted source, always assume hybrids, (which you have from the looks of things). And sure enough, a look at your colony picture shows several adults that are darker than the norm for current pure stock in the US.

Thanks @Hisserdude, very cool to get your input!!

These are the only 2 hisser species I have. I also have Eublaberus prosticus and Dubias I use as feeders and for Blatticomposting.

Other than that my interest has shifted to polyphaga and corydiid species as well as Scarabaeidae. I got into the hobby as something to do with my son but I'm enjoying it more than him at this point.

For my G.portentosa, I started the stock 10 with nymphs from an eBay seller, plus a Petco rescue I added. So I can pretty much guarantee the stock is not pure.

To clarify my intent, I'm not looking to make a profit beyond covering shipping at most, but the main goal is to find these guys a new home with a need or interest.

A trade would be a nice gesture, but I would be happy to send them to anyone for the cost of shipping, especially if they are new to the hobby or are a small seller.

Hi there,

I tried to send you a direct message, but wasn't sure it went through.  I am unable to take either of the colonies as a whole, but was wondering if you would be willing to sell me a few sub-adult females from each colony.  I am a small pet owner and would love to have them, but understand if you are uninterested at this time as I have no trade options.  Please pm me if interested.
