Eurycotis hissing

Herpetologyfrk

Fifth Instar
I recently had a male Eurycotis opaca mature. I don't know if it is a common occurrence within the genus or not but he started hissing when I would prod him onto my hand. I'm sure it isn't a big deal but I thought it was cool :)

Yep, they do that. :P

Blaberus will do it too. I believe it has something to do with the mechanism that drives their defensive odors out of their bodies. If you noticed they have to squeeze their abdomen to make the hiss and only after doing so will you smell any defensive odors.

 Sounds like they're hissing much better than some of my hissers! I have some will try to hiss, but all you hear is a subtle sound of air being squeezed, but no hiss...
