Ootheca
Hi, my female hisser is obviously trying to drop her ootheca (her abdomen looks like it is pinching the ootheca off). However, it has now been nearly 3 days and it has not dropped or gone back into her abdomen. I am worried about her health, how can I help her/what do I do?????

She dropped it! It was definitely an ootheca. To be honest I wanted her to drop it. I bought them as pets not to breed and was unaware she was female as I am very new to the hobby!

If it is outside here body for more than the half hour it takes to form and retract the ootheca is dead. If it happens again and doesn't fall off you can cut off what's sticking out. Gently trying to remove could damage her.

Hi, I have a female Madagascar with a ootheca which was out the night before last and now is 2/3 retracted. The rest is dried looking. I just rubbed with a warm water q-tip but otherwise haven't done anything. They are not handled at all and I don't want to stress her out more by trying to handle her unless absolutely necessary.

Is it ok to let things run their course unless she seems outwardly in distress? Should I keep wetting the ootheca or just let it dry completely?

They are in a planted terrarium with isopods, and are in the crack of an upright log so I can reach in to apply the q-tip but would be difficult to pull her out. I would have to get them to all come out then try to scoop her up before she darts into another hiding spot.

Thanks!

Jen
