Hisser with ootheca hanging out

OBJ

Fourth Instar
One of the portentosas has about a 1/4" of her ootheca hanging out.

At first it looked fine, but after several days now I am expecting something must be wrong.

Does she need a little help since only some of it is outside or just be left with it to decide for herself to abort it ... or ??

There has been many abortions in that culture. It could be stress related - as discussed in the thread started by Huntsman - since there are so many (A bigger aquarium has been ordered). <_<

Eggs contained in the part that's inside may still hatch out fine. There's nothing you can do but wait.

Thanks for the quick answer - She will be left to her own judgement ...Could the ootheca actually become so large that it cannot be accomodated inside - if say the offspring was very healthy and fairly big? Maybe the 'uterus' (similar to ...) is not as flexible as in the mammal world meaning it is designed for a 'medium size' ootheca... On the other hand, the whole abdomen is very flexible - also lengthwise, so why not prolong the abdomen and drag the whole thing inside... a bit odd.

That's usually what happens. When there is a female with a large batch of nymphs on the way thay become quite distended from the ootheca. Maybe she had a hard time shifting it to the brood pouch. Good Luck!
