I'm thinking of buying some madagascan hissing roaches from my local pet store, do they do ok in rubbermaid containers? I want to make a small colony.

also how many do I need to start a small colony.

thanks,

Jimbe

Many people keep them in the large plastic boxes, just make sure to find one with a tight fitting lid and figure out how you want to set up the ventilation (muliple 16th inch holes or glued in screen should work).

I have a small clear plastic tank with a ventilated top i think it would be too small though.

how good do they climb?

I'm not sure honestly. I bought some off www.bugsincyberspace.com. Ordered 3, ended up with 4. I'm just keeping them as pets right now, as well.

I live in the UK so its quite hard to get different roach species. All I got at the moment is Dubias. I found a site in the UK which sells Hissers, Deaths head cockroaches(but they dont have black wings so i think they are discoids), Cuban roaches and Blaberus Giganteus.

Hey RosenKrieger, Andrew from the betta forums here!

I kind of like the B. giganteus...how difficult is it to raise monster-sized individuals?

(sorry if that question is a little outlandish)

They are not difficult to raise

just an inch of substrate and something to climb on along with fruits, veggies, and a source of protein.

keep the male to female ratio small like maybe 1:5 cause the males fight.

the larger the colony, the more tank space you'll need. don't forget a lip/cover/top because the male can jump and fly.
