Okay, not trying to slam this board or anything, but why would you want to keep cockroaches for pets? I mean, if you really want those things, why not just go to New York or something? They have a major cockroach problem over there. Man, those things destroy homes and are hard to kill. The only thing I have seen them used for (besides killing in creative fashions) is in the show "Fear Factor", where contestants had to eat a few of them. I assume that you people don't work for that show, so I am curious as to why you would even want to have them

This is where you are totally wrong, roaches do not destroy homes. People are the ones that causes roaches. Besides roaches are very easy to breed and to feed. And if you have a pet lizard or frog or something you can feed the roaches to your pets, Roaches are also very clean and inexpensive any more questions just email me. Also roaches are beneficial in the Cancer Research today

Of the thousands of species of cockroach, the ones that live in houses in New York are only ONE. There are tons and tons of cool species. THey are more interesting, more colorful and easier to keep than fish, reptiles, etc. etc. And they're much more social than most people I know. Don't judge a book by one page out of it.

Um, I can understand that there are a lot of species and stuff. However, what would happen if it got loose in your house? Those things can lay thousands of eggs and before you know it, they have taken over your house. I am just curious about one thing: Out of ALL the things that can be kept as pets, why cockroaches? They are bugs. You can't take them for walks of play with them. I can see how they can be easier to care fore because they will eat just about anything. What exactly do you do with them? Just keep them in a fish tank and watch them crawl around and multiply?

Millions of people keep FISH, and you can't take those out to play with. Shouldn't you find goldfish just as difficult to believe?

Insects and arachnids are the most beautiful and amazing animals on earth. They're so different from us that they're absolutely fascinating just to look at, but yes, there are roaches large and docile enough to handle. I've kept insects as pets almost my entire life...I have cats and other pets that you can "pet", but they just aren't as interesting to me as arthropods.

Well actually none of the ones I have would multiply like mad... well a couple kinds might, but MOST don't. One species can't even have babies until it's three years old, and then it only has a few a year until it dies of old age at ten years old. Why cockroaches? Somre are really pretty... like the banana roach and the orangehead roach. Some are interesting, like the hissing roach. You CAN hold them and carry them around. Actually, they're not as fun as say a dog or a cat but they're about the same as having fish, reptiles, amphibians or anything you can't really play with... like a house plant. Or if you collect something like stamps... why? It's just that they're interesting. No other resaon. I like them...

Well, if I ever meet one of you guys in person, I'd be curious to see your collection. Where exactly do these particular roaches originate from? Can you buy these at pet stores? If you really get these roaches from other countries, aren't you afraid of one of those freak accidents similar to the killer bees? I mean, imagine if you had some aggressive breed of roach and it mated with roach native to this area. Now, I haven't dealt with roaches before, but aren't there some breeds that bite and stuff

Their jaws wouldnt be strong enough to pierce human flesh and they certainly aren't meat eaters. And two different species of cockroach breeding to become some sort of megaroach is as impossible as say, humans breeding with apes or cats breeding with dogs. They just can't. Plus, as already stated, all pest roaches already exist all over the world so it can't get worse. There are barely any pest roaches.

The roaches come from all over. I personally have species from here in Ohio, central America, south America, Australia, Africa, Florida, and the Carribbean. No roaches bite or sting or try to kill you in any way. At least none of the 80+ species that people around the world keep do. And as far as KILLER ROACHES DESTROYING THE US! goes... probably not. All the pest species are already common all over the world, the rest have special needs or grow really slow... or a bunch of other reasons why they don't get out and destroy New York. Oh, and yes you can buy roaches at some pet stores... but those are usually Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and lobster roaches. Other roaches you have to buy from insect specialists, universities, etc. Also, the roaches don't interbreed very often... just like a dog won't breed with a bear to create a SUPER CARNIVOR! The reasons why are simple science... some are tiny some are huge, they have evolved different genes to different lives, etc.
