It appears to be a member of the subfamily Copiphorinae - coneheaded katydids, though even the neotropical members of this subfamily are supposed to max out at around 100mm (for anyone familiar with katydids who might know the genus, this specimen is believed to have come from Mexico). The long antennae are an indicator it's a katydid rather than a grasshopper. I found an online key to genera of conehead katytids but it's only good for species found north of Mexico and this animal may not be from any US genus.
