ID Needed for Caterpillar

I saved him from ants, and now I want to raise him but I don't know what he eats. Any help with identification would be amazing!

I caught it in Elk Grove, California.

Looks like a cutworm which usually eats grass and plantain but I'm not positive CA has different species than NY

Know this is old, but that looks like a fall armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda. You can tell by the black triangle behind the head. It's a pest that eats absolutely anything, including corn and other grains.
